Asexual Erasure 101 – PRIDE 2017

Kate | she/her | demisexual, straight, ally

[background noise present throughout the recording. Music from Bath Spa’s Pride event]

Lu
So, how do you identify?

Kate
Um, I identify as demisexual-straight, I mainly identify as an ally.

Lu
Awesome! How does that affect how you interact with the community, or people outside of the community…?

Kate
Uh, well, like I said I mainly consider myself an ally because I am only attracted to male-identifiers, including people who are genderfluid. I’m not attracted to female-identifying people – except for people who are genderfluid – it’s confusing!

Lu
Yeah.

Kate
So mostly, because of that I feel like I’m mostly straight, so I do everything I do as an ally? Despite the fact that I – I’m involved. But like, when I say to people “oh, I don’t really feel like I’m part of the community,” they say “oh yeah but you run Pride” [Kate is the co-founder and organiser of Bath Spa’s Pride], they don’t say “oh yeah but you’re demisexual.” So mostly I feel… irrelevant.

Nathan
[butting in to stand on soapbox despite not being a part of the interview] But you are demisexual! Asexuals are included!

Kate
I know, it just – it just – You asked how I felt! And that’s – personally, I feel irrelevant.

Lu
Yeah.

Kate
[laughing] Gheh!
